The Bristol Aztecs youth offense finally found its feet Sunday, pounding out 7 rushing TD’s to advance to 3-0-1 and remain undefeated in 2010. Lady luck was certainly smiling on the young Aztecs though, as three Bristol fumbles were all recovered for scores.
A combination of injuries, exams and holidays saw only 20 players make the return trip to Reading, but this group hung together and produced the clubs best performance of the year. In the two teams previous encounter neither offense were able to trouble the scoreboard, this time however the visitors were intent on making amends.
The Rebels elected to receive the kickoff and were presented with an Aztec defense missing DB’s Pooley, Adrissi and Eaton, but with a strong wind blowing around Prospect Park it was always going to be tough for Rebel QB Hopkins to take full advantage of the situation. The Aztecs quickly forced the punt and on their opening offensive possession it was Dan Maher taking the ball inside the Rebel 20, only to be met with a punishing hit from a Reading defender that jarred the ball loose – but straight into the welcoming arms of Jamiel Tinto who raced into the end zone untouched. A missed extra point and it was 6-0 in a hurry. Lightning was to strike twice for the unfortunate Rebels, as a second fumble was recovered by OT Elliot McMahon for a TD. Another missed PAT put the score at 12-00. The Aztec D were continuing where they had left off in the previous encounter, denying the home side any success on the ground or in the air. Crouch, Tinto and Fornah all coming up with big plays. Offensively Jet Pooley hammered in another TD prior to the half and the visitors went into the interval 18-00 up.
It couldn’t have started any worse for the Aztecs in the second half as the kickoff return was fumbled and handed the ball to the Rebels on the Aztec 20. A penalty pushed the ball inside the ten but the impressive Aztec D stiffened and held firm once again.
The Aztec offense, fresh from a stern talking to regarding ball security from the staff started to turn the screw on a weary Rebel defense. Defensive standouts Carvalho, MGrath and Fornah were filling in admirably on the offensive line, paving the way for Tinto and Pooley to both add to their TD haul, and a pair of Jordan Crouch scores put the result beyond any doubt. The resilient Rebels hung tough and played until the final whistle sounded, but the Bristol defense were always in control, maintaining the shutout once again.
Reading must now dust themselves off and prepare for the away fixture at “Fortress Filton” – a place where as of yet neither the youth or senior Aztecs have lost a game.
